Birth of a Soul: Presence in Bloom
Oil on linen canvas
70 x 90 cm
In this painting, a fetus blossoms in the ovary of a flower, and the embryonic fluid trickles down to supply life to a magical waterfall. The image of the womb reminds us of how growth can happen in the darkest of places; all that is left to do is surrender and lean into rest. This fetus straddles the states of being mortal yet divine, secure but abundant, vulnerable but protected.
The waterfall cleanses and nourishes; it invites us to connect to its steady rhythm while surrendering to Flow and evolution. What can our inner landscape look like, and how attuned are we to it? Where can we find refuge when times are difficult? The waterfall speaks about the interconnectedness of life, where all elements are intertwined. In Deepak Chopra’s words, it depicts how we are “seamlessly flowing with the cosmos”, where there is “no difference between your breathing and the breathing of the rain forest, between your bloodstream and the world’s rivers, between your bones and the chalk cliffs of Dover.”
Every brushstroke that I paint feels like another step towards coming home to myself- This season I made an attempt to learn oil painting and I couldn’t be more in love with this medium. Every impression marked by the brush gently softens an inner critic that stops me from trying new things or forces me into a perfectionistic war with myself. It feels like I am taking my own hand and nourishing my own soul.
